The Mommy Makeover-It's Not What You're Thinking!

This week, I took myself on a trip to Nordstrom to get a little bit of a makeover. Yes, a makeover, but not the surgical mommy makeover I hear about-just the face and no needles or anesthesia used. I desperately needed some new makeup. My daily five minute routine products weren't cutting it for days where I wanted to feel a little more glam, and it had been years since I sat at one of those makeup counters and let someone else work their magic on my face. So, I did it. I walked into Nordstrom with a bare face and let go-hoping to leave prettier than how I entered.

It was NICE. My skin looked flawless. My cheekbones seemed higher. And my lips appeared plumper and more defined without the use of fillers. Makeup really can create miracles. It was also nice to sit, talk, not multitask, and know I would be walking out of there looking runway ready, even though I was honestly just heading home to record a couple podcast episodes and have a marketing meeting.

I'd been talking about doing this little makeover exercise for a couple months, but there seemed to always be an excuse why NOT to do it. Have you been there? You really want to go out on a date, but it's just too hard to find a sitter. You wish you could get to the gym or go for a run, but you're just exhausted. You'd love to take a long, hot bath, but let's get real. Who's got time for that? It's 4 minutes showers for you. If you find yourself in a space like that, like you've got an intuitive nudge to go do something for YOU, but excuses (aka haters) creep in and tell you all the reasons why you shouldn't, take a deep breath and do this instead..

Once your mind has exhausted all the reasons why you can't or shouldn't or won't be able to do that thing, put your thang down, flip it, and reverse it (thanks, Missy). Basically, ask yourself what are the reasons you SHOULD, CAN, and ARE ABSOLUTELY ABLE TO do this particular thing? You may be surprised by the answer and possibility that awaits.

If we gave equal attention to the positive reasons vs. the negative ones, I bet we'd get out of our own way a lot more.

For me this week, it manifested into a makeover, like actual makeup on the face. But, in other cases, it's been a makeover for the soul through meditation and journaling or a makeover for the mind through reading inspirational and intelligent books or listening to equally educational podcasts.

I've learned to be more proactive in this space of caring for myself than not, but I still have moments where those excuses of the day to day grind get in the way of my prioritizing my needs. And then, I hit the point of no return where a full on mommy  makeover is what I need because the tinted moisturizer just ain't cutting it. Maybe that's extreme, but a little reset every now and then can often go a LOOOOONG way.

So, if you're feeling any sort of depletion in the world of body, mind, or spirit, consider a boost in the form of a makeover (whatever that looks like to you) to help you out. Whether it be a trip to the beauty counter, a solo day spent doing all the things you love, or subscribing to a podcast or Substack that blows your mind, trust it's probably just what you need right now.
